The Light
In THE LIGHT, Tom Tykwer paints the portrait of a family caught between collapse and a new beginning and deals with the big issues of our time in a world that is reeling. Tim (Lars Eidinger), Milena (Nicolette Krebitz), their almost grown-up twins Frieda (Elke Biesendorfer) and Jon (Julius Gause) and their illegitimate son Dio (Elyas Eldridge) - this is the Engels family, who seemingly have nothing left to hold them together when housekeeper Farrah (Tala al Deen) enters their lives. The mysterious Syrian woman puts the Engels' emotional world to an unexpectedly wild test.
Harmony – friction. Staying together – separation. Rut. Life. A typical German family in a world that is always spinning fast and has begun to totter. Tim (Lars Eidinger), Milena (Nicolette Krebitz), their twins Frieda (Elke Biesendorfer) and Jon (Julius Gause) and Milena’s son Dio (Elyas Eldridge) – these are the Engels. A family that lives more side by side than together and that nothing holds them together when the housekeeper Farrah (Tala Al-Deen) enters their lives. The mysterious woman from Syria puts the Engels’ world to an unexpected test and brings to light feelings that have long been hidden. In doing so, she pursues a plan all of her own that will fundamentally change the lives of the Engels family.
After seven years and four seasons with the TV series ‘Babylon Berlin’, writer and director Tom Tykwer has once again made a film for the big screen with THE LIGHT.
Tom Tykwer on his film: ‘After quite a long time, which I spent with “Babylon Berlin” in the roaring 20s, I can finally turn my attention back to our present. In THE LIGHT there are arguments, wrestling and fights, but there is also laughter, singing and dancing. The film aims to challenge the spectrum of emotions and the corresponding narrative possibilities. And the characters are very familiar to me. So I want to try to reflect their inner turmoil and at the same time their solidarity for the audience and make it tangible.’
DAS LICHT is produced by X Filme Creative Pool (producer: Uwe Schott) and will be released in German cinemas on 20 March 2025 by X Verleih and distributed by Warner Bros. Beta Film is responsible for world sales.
